Are contingency fees legal in India?
No. The Bar Council of India Rules forbid advocates from stipulating a fee contingent on the result of litigation or agreeing to share in the proceeds. Indian lawyers charge fixed, per-hearing or hourly fees instead, and litigation funding by third parties who are not lawyers is lawful in principle but uncommon.
