Who pays if I lose a case in France?
The loser usually pays the court costs (dépens), and the judge may order a contribution to the winner's lawyer fees under article 700 of the Code of Civil Procedure. That amount is set by the judge and is often well below the real fees, so each side usually bears most of its own lawyer's cost.
