Who pays if I lose a case in the United States?

Usually nothing to your own contingency lawyer, and under the "American rule" each side normally pays its own attorney, so losing rarely means paying the other side's lawyer. You may still owe case expenses if your agreement says so, and court costs, fee-shifting statutes and contract clauses can be exceptions.
